CHAPTER SIX

Brin switched on the lamp. Riley, who was groping his way downstairs, was blinded by the sudden light, and blinked against it. “What did you say?”

“What? When? What are you doing out of bed?” She flung off the covers and rushed to the foot of the stairs, thinking he might need assistance.

“You called me Jon.”

“Did I?”

“Yes. You never call me Jon except when we’re making love.”

“I must have been dreaming.”

“Must have been a helluva dream.”

His insinuating smile poured over her like warm honey. Her body’s tingling response to it vexed her.

“You haven’t said what you’re doing out of bed.”

“You didn’t ask.”

“I did so.”

“You did? Hmm. I must have been shell-shocked by hearing you call me Jon.” He took the remaining stairs and came to stand above her on the last step. Only then did Brin fully realize that he was as scantily dressed as she. He was wearing nothing more than what she’d last seen him in, a pair of cotton briefs . . . brief cotton briefs, which rode low on his narrow hips. She loved that spot, an inch or two beneath his navel, where the satiny stripe of hair began to unfurl. He loved being kissed there too. Loved—

She jerked her eyes up to his face and caught his mocking smile. Uncomfortably aware of the brevity of her costume, she crossed her arms over her chest. The ugly robe had been left behind in her hurry, leaving her in nothing more than the bikini panty and tank top, which clung like a second skin.

“You’ve got great legs,” Riley whispered roughly.

Months ago, when they had lived together as husband and wife, neither of them had exhibited a trace of modesty. Nakedness had never been awkward. Now, with the stillness of the night closing around them, with the specter of their separation looming between them, with his intense blue eyes boring into her, Brin felt more naked than ever in her life. Exposed. Vulnerable.

Any small animal whose weaknesses have been exploited will lash out at its predator. In this case, Brin’s only weapon was hostility. “You came all the way downstairs, woke me up, to tell me that?”

“No, but as long as I was here …” He shrugged. “The anesthetic is wearing off.” Her animosity vanished and her brow puckered with concern. “Your hand hurts?”

“Like hell.”

“The doctor said it would when the deadening began wearing off. He gave me some pain pills for you to take. They’re in my purse in the kitchen. I’ll get them.” She turned in that direction, but Riley grasped her wrist and stopped her. “I don’t want a pain pill.”

“But if it hurts—”

“I’d rather have a brandy. That’ll numb the pain, but won’t knock me out. Join me in one?” With his fingers still loosely clasped around her wrist, he pulled her across the room to the bar. She padded after him docilely. The lateness of the hour lent a surrealistic quality to the occasion. Were they actually walking around in the middle
